Source: OSNews The lack of a new stable release of Debian GNU/Linux since July 2002 is fuelling the campaigns of many candidates for the project's leadership position, with many pushing for a shorter and more regular release cycle to arrest user departures.
Source: Slashdot Org latest news headlines diegocgteleline.es writes "Larry McVoy, the owner of BitKeeper (also one of the guys behind LMbench) has posted a message to linux-kernel where he announces a open source client of BitKeeper, which would only allow synching against BK trees. It looks like it's licensed under the NWL (No Whining License) that will force you to 'not whine about this product or any other products from BitMover, Inc.'"

Source: Slashdot Org latest news headlines Neil Halelamien writes "Researchers at the University of Bath are developing a rapid prototyping machine capable of making copies of itself and other products, reminiscent of the Universal Constructor proposed by von Neumann. The so-called Replicating Rapid-Prototyper (or RepRap) would produce items from raw materials and small components like microchips. If successful, this could make rapid prototyping cheap enough for regular in-home usage, especially since the project's lead, Dr. Adrian Bowyer, will be releasing his project's designs under the GNU GPL. It's previously been proposed that a similar system would be useful for space exploration and industrialization."
Source: OSNews Tony Iams is no stranger to operating systems. A senior analyst with Ideas International in Port Chester, New York, Iams spends much of his time working with users - and vendors - of the latest operating systems. SearchEnterpriseLinux.com sat down with Iams to discuss the recently released Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL 4). In this interview, Iams talks about some of the new features of RHEL 4 and explains the direction the operating system will take in the future.

Source: OSNews Smart handheld devices or personal digital assistants (PDA) extend our access to the information on our desktops, from addresses to telephone numbers. Unfortunately, when it comes to vendor support for synchronizing this information with a *nix operating system, the options are limited. In this article, NewsForge reviews the various GPL-based suites available for synchronizing PalmOS-based devices with Linux. This one is of great interest too.
Source: OSNews Mandrakesoft have released the first release candidate of 10.2 for PPC. As with the 10.1 version, 10.2 is created by the community. There is no information on the website yet but the ISO files are available on mirrors. Also, although available since last weekend, the first release candidate of Mandrakelinux 10.2 was finally announced on Mandrakeclub.
Source: OSNews Xen is a paravirtualization technology available for the Linux kernel that lets you enclose and test new upgrades as if running them in the existing environment but without the worries of disturbing the original system. This article shows you how to install a Xen system that will give administrators a valuable sandbox for testing system upgrades (as well as a playground for running multiple virtual machines on the same Linux box).

Source: Freshmeat Daily News J-Bird is a record keeping system for observations of birds. In the parlance of birders, it is bird listing software. It is oriented toward birding trips. Information recorded includes region, trip date, locality, keywords, notes, species observed, and notes on individual species. It can record sightings, produce trip reports, produce composite lists such as life lists, tally observations by category, and query sightings. Regional checklists can be built, used to record sightings, and be included in trip reports. Sightings can be exported to CSV tables and HTML tables. Changes: In this version, the user interface has been converted to Java Swing from a hybrid AWT/Swing interface, and shortcuts have been improved on Linux and MS Windows.
Source: Freshmeat Daily News GNU VPE creates a virtual ethernet by creating host-to-host tunnels between multiple endpoints. Unlike other virtual private "network" solutions which merely create a single tunnel, it creates a real network with multiple endpoints. It is designed to be very simple and easy to setup. It can also be used to tunnel into some VPN network using a variety of protocols. It is, however, primarily designed to sit on the gateway machines of company branches to connect them together. Changes: This release further cleans up the documentation, by documenting the formerly undocumented icmp transport protocol and describing the transport protocols in more detail in the gvpe.protocol manpage. It also updates (and documents) the tinc device driver interfaces. Experimental DNS tunneling support has been added and an exemption to allow binary redistributions of gvpe linked against OpenSSL has been added to COPYING.
Source: Freshmeat Daily News Coyote Linux is a single floppy distribution for setting up network utility services such as Internet connection sharing, firewalling, or wireless access points. The goal of the Coyote project is to make it as quick and easy as possible to set up a Linux floppy, and to require a minimal amount of Linux knowledge to do so. Changes: This release fixes problems that prevented floppies built with 2.20.0 and 2.21.0 from booting properly on some systems. The 2.4.29 kernel, iptables 1.3.1, and busybox 1.00 were also added.
Source: Freshmeat Daily News BitRock InstallBuilder allows you to create easy-to-use installers for Linux, Solaris, and Windows applications. The generated installer for an application has a native look-and-feel and no external dependencies, and can be run in GUI, text, and unattended modes. Changes: Improved startup and runtime speed for complex installers. JRE autodetection has an option to prompt users for JVM selection. A new CD-ROM target platform. New rules, action types, and a number of minor bugfixes.

Source: Freshmeat Daily News GNU Classpath (essential libraries for Java) is a project to create free core class libraries for use with virtual machines and compilers for the Java programming language. It includes all native methods and core classes necessary for a completely functional execution environment. Changes: Base core class library for upcoming GCC 4.0 and Kaffe 1.1.5 releases. ImageIO support through gdkpixbuf, many new nio character encoders and decoders, fully automated class documentation generation, generic VMStackWalker support for runtimes, many bugfixes, optimizations, and new Swing support.
Source: Freshmeat Daily News PatchWork is a Web-based patch tracking system designed to facilitate the contribution and management of contributions to an open-source project. Patches that have been sent to a mailing list are 'caught' by the system and appear on a Web page. Any comments posted that reference the patch are appended to the patch page. The project's maintainer can then scan through the list of patches, marking each with a certain state such as Accepted, Rejected, or Under Review. Old patches can be sent to the archive or deleted. Changes: This release includes new searching functionality, as well as an initial command-line client to list, search, view, and apply patches using an HTTP/SOAP interface. Also, a few minor bugs with the Web interface were fixed, as well as parser improvements.
Source: Freshmeat Daily News Conary is a distributed software management system for Linux distributions. It replaces traditional package management solutions (such as RPM and dpkg) with one designed to enable loose collaboration across the Internet. It enables sets of distributed and loosely connected repositories to define the components which are installed on a Linux system. Rather than having a full distribution come from a single vendor, it allows administrators and developers to branch a distribution, keeping the pieces which fit their environment while grabbing components from other repositories across the Internet. Changes: Rollbacks now take much less time and space when installing, updating, and erasing. Architecture definition has been expanded. The new :debuginfo component infrastructure now works properly. Several shadow merging bugs were fixed. Conary now has many default values for macros and architectures that can be overridden and expanded by distributions, instead of relying on the distribution for all settings. Compiling sources is now a little bit faster. A simple interface for populating bugzilla components from Conary repositories has been added.

Source: Freshmeat Daily News Bastille Linux aims to be the most comprehensive, flexible, and educational Security Hardening Program for Red Hat (Fedora Core, Enterprise Linux, and original Red Hat), SuSE, Gentoo, Mandrake, and Debian Linux, as well as HP-UX and Mac OS X. Virtually every task it performs is optional, providing immense flexibility. It educates the installing admin regarding the topic at hand before asking any question. The interactive nature allows the program to be more thorough when securing, while the educational component produces an admin who is less likely to compromise the increased security. Changes: A show-stopper bug in the less-used text-based interface was corrected.
