23 May 2005: When developing software, utilizing techniques that save time and give maximum results are always beneficial. The same is true if the software we develop is meant to empower its users to do the same. Kurt Pfeifle submitted the following editorial to osOpinion/osViews which illustrates that ISVs shouldnt have to provide 16 different distro/version packages for their application to deploy software on Linux, yet this is becoming commonplace.

It does look like a few kernel drivers need a little tweaking."

Redet (Regular Expression Development and Execution Tool) is a tool for developing and executing regular expressions using any of more than 20 search programs, editors, and programming languages. For each program in each locale a palette showing the available regular expression constructs is provided. The features of each program are determined by running a test suite, which guarantees that they will be
correct for the particular program version in use and for the user's locale. The locale may be changed without exiting Redet. Selections from the palette may be copied to the regular expression window with a mouse click. Definitions can be added to the palette via an initialization file. The regular expressions executed are recorded in a history list, from which entries may be copied to the regular expression window with a mouse click. This allows complex regular
expressions to be developed in pieces. When a suitable regular expression has been constructed it may be saved to a file. Named character classes may be defined in a file or entered interactively. As long as the underlying program supports Unicode, Redet fully supports UTF-8 Unicode.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Plash (the Principle of Least Authority Shell) is
a Unix shell that lets you run Unix programs with
access only to the files and directories they need
to run. In order to implement this, the filesystem
is virtualized. Each process can have its own
namespace, which can contain a subset of your
files. Plash is implemented by modifying GNU libc
and replacing the system calls that use filenames.
For example, open() is changed so that it sends a
message to a file server via a socket. If the
request is successful, the server sends the client
a file descriptor. Processes are run in a chroot jail under dynamically-allocated user IDs. No kernel modifications
are required. Existing Linux binaries work unchanged.

License: GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL)

Changes:
It's now possible to build Plash's modified glibc from scratch without manual intervention. There's now an option for granting programs access to the X11 Window System automatically, so you can run X programs conveniently (it's off by default because X11 is not secure; clients can interfere with each other.) There's a new way of setting options in the shell. This release has limited support for directory file descriptors, so XEmacs can run under it.

options allow the addition of single insertions or
