Not so long ago, adopting Linux for any endeavor was a radical idea. But for the radicals early adopters and those asked to implement bleeding-edge technologies during the Internet boom Linux was a perfectly reasonable solution. Paired with Samba, Linux offered more robust file and print services than Windows. Combined with the Apache web server, Linux powered web sites. The latter mixed with OSS tools such as Perl and MySQL transformed the Internet into a World Wide Web of possibilities.

novel design. It has a click-to-focus but not
raise-on-focus policy, a window resizing mechanism
that allows one or many edges of a window to be
changed in one action, and an innovative menubar
that shares the same part of the screen as the
taskbar. Window titlebars are prevented from going
off the edge of the screen by constraining the
mouse pointer. When appropriate, the pointer is
also constrained to the taskbar/menubar in order
to make target menu items easier to hit.

Changes:
Bugs that prevented windows from being made smaller from a side that was at the edge of the screen and that caused the first clients taskbar button to disappear when all clients were hidden were fixed.

Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver.
It saves many files together into a single tape or
disk archive, and can restore individual files
from the archive. It includes command line
interfaces for the "tar", "Sun-Tar", "cpio",
"pax", and "gnutar" command-line syntax. It
includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern matcher,
multi-volume support, the ability to archive
sparse files and ACLs, the ability to archive
extended file flags, automatic archive format
detection, automatic byte order recognition,
automatic archive compression/decompression,
remote archives, and special features that allow
star to be used for full and incremental backups.
It includes the only known platform independent
"rmt" server program.

Changes:
The program now supports efficient and accurate archival of sparse files using the new holey file interface from recent Solaris development kernels (Nevada build 13 or newer). A bug that caused star to list the size of the file in the archive instead of the real size when sparse file handling was used in POSIX.1-2001 mode and the file size was greater than 8 GB was fixed along with a bug that caused star to dump core while extracting a file with more than 10016 holes.

Every user whose client connects to the Internet should configure his firewall immediately after installation. Some Linux distributions include firewall configuration as a part of installation, often offering a set of defaults configurations to choose from. However, to ensure that your machine presents the minimum "attack surface" (a measure of the number of vulnerable ports, user accounts, and sockets exposed to attack) to the predatory inhabitants of the Internet, you may need to do some manual configuration of your firewall. Here are three tools that can help.

The Network File System (NFS) is a standard protocol for sharing file services with Linux and Unix computers. It is a distributed file system that enables local access to remote disks and file systems and is based on the client\server architecture. Although easy to configure, it is typically used only to transfer data over an intranet or LAN because of its transparency and security potholes when exposed to the risks of the Internet. However, it still can be employed -- without compromising security -- to share files over the Internet by configuring it to run on a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection. This article will show you how to set up NFS to run over a CIPE-VPN connection between two Linux systems.
