Zenwalk Linux (formerly Minislack) 1.3 has been released: "The stable
Zenwalk Linux 1.3 is available as a CD-ROM ISO. More than a hundred
packages have been updated, including kernel 2.6.12.6 with Reiser4
support. Many new features have been added. The fast and complete
XFce desktop environment (4.2.2) has been updated with the new Xffm
file manager (4.3.3.1) that allows desktop icons and 'icon view' mode of
operation. Zenwalk is leaning towards the GTK toolkit API and provides
its own gnome-libs packages (2.10.2), but runs both GTK and QT
environments at will. Installing and running KDE as your primary desktop
is optional. Zenwalk 1.3 is a complete desktop and multimedia environment
including a host of graphical (GTK) system configuration tools."

Interesting article comparing the kernels of Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris. Makes me wonder what the OS world is going to look like ten years from now. Only thing I know for sure is that it will be interesting!"One of the more interesting aspects of the three OSes is the amount of
similarities between them. Once you get past the different naming conventions,
each OS takes fairly similar paths toward implementing the different concepts.
Each OS supports time-shared scheduling of threads, dem

From the article: 'Solaris, FreeBSD, and Linux are obviously benefiting from each other. With Solaris going open source, I expect this to continue at a faster rate. My impression is that change is most rapid in Linux. The benefits of this are that new technology has a quick incorporation into the system.'"

A few days ago I wrote a tutorial on how to connect your Mac to a GPRS service via Bluetooth and a Bluetooth-enabled phone. However, not everyone owns a Mac or a higher-end phone. And so here is a quick tutorial on how to connect your Linux laptop to a GPRS service using an infrared-enabled phone. For this article we used a Sony Ericsson K700i phone, a Sony Vaio N505VX laptop (which has an onboard IrDA) running the latest Arch Linux and Cingular's GPRS. In the following weeks I will also be publishing two more tutorials showing how to do the same thing under Linux but via Bluetooth and the USB port. Read more on this exclusive OSNews article

Rasmussen is working on a number of AJAX applications that provide a rich desktop-like interface to the end-user from within the Web browser. Other interesting things include a Linux port of Google Earth, the company is opening a new engineering center in Sydney, and Google's design philosophy is based on end-user loyalty - not money. WindowLab is a small and simple window manager of
novel design. It has a click-to-focus but not
raise-on-focus policy, a window resizing mechanism
that allows one or many edges of a window to be
changed in one action, and an innovative menubar
that shares the same part of the screen as the
taskbar. Window titlebars are prevented from going
off the edge of the screen by constraining the
mouse pointer. When appropriate, the pointer is
also constrained to the taskbar/menubar in order
to make target menu items easier to hit.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Scrolling the mouse wheel in the taskbar now task switches. A crash was fixed that occurred on the BSDs (and presumably on other systems without /proc/self/exe), and another crash was fixed that occurred when there were no focused windows and alt + F12 was pressed. Events are always replayed rather than sometimes being eaten. New windows are no longer given focus. The TODO file was added.

Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex
query language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to
search through pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language
enables users to perform far more complex queries than what common
search engines currently support. It can be fed any custom sources,
since its abstraction layer manages the search results and their meta
tags in a uniform way. In conjunction with the local process scheduler
(such as "cron"), Magellan enables you to save your requests and replay
them later automatically; new results are sent through email and RSS
in realtime. Magellan also provides full anonymity through smart
multi-proxy support.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
The tool now sends a confirmation email when a user subscribes to an alert online; this allows more secure deployment to a large audience. A new driver for the AskJeeves search engine has been added, featuring many specific options such as language, site search, and date range search. Alexa thumbnails can now be turned off.

zufall is a simple program to change the
background periodically. It takes one or more
directories with images as a parameter (no GUI)
and sets a randomly chosen image as background. If

of reading input in lines as sed, bbe reads
arbitrary blocks from an input stream and performs
byte-related transformations on found blocks.
Blocks can be defined using start/stop strings,
stream offset and block length, or a combination.
Basic editing commands include delete, replace,
search/replace, binary operations (and, or, etc.),
append, and bcd/ASCII conversion. For examining
the input stream, it contains some grep-like
features like printing the input file name, stream
offset, and block number of found blocks. Block
contents can also be printed in different formats
like hex, octal, ASCII, and binary.
