Audacity is a completely free / open source waveform audio editor for Mac, Windows, and Linux, with robust stereo recording and editing, effects support, and basic multichannel features. It's a great little program getting more and more exposure; M-Audio has even added it to their podcast bundle. But it has a few rough edges, and has gone a long time without an upgrade -- until now.
1.2.4b is a relatively minor release bringing together lots of important bug fixes. But version 1.3 is more ambitious, and could bring this free editor into prime time, with real multitrack support, precise selection capabilities, better Mac support, and some innovative new features. Details after the break.

Robert writes "The first update to the GNU General Public License in 15 years has begun. Details about the process and guidelines by which it will be updated by the Free Software Foundation, and the free/open source community at large, are now available. The FSF has announced plans to release the first draft of the new license for comment at a conference to be held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in mid-January 2006." From the article: "This is the first time the GPL has been open to a public development process. Stallman created version 1 himself in 1985 and introduced version 2 in 1991 after taking legal advice and collecting developer opinion. The rapid adoption of Linux and hundred of other software products licensed under the GPL makes the development of GPLv3 a significant event, and one that is now likely to involve some of the biggest vendors in the industry, with Hewlett-Packard, Novell, and Red Hat already having declared their intention to participate."

in the design of aircraft controls and instruments
for creating general purpose user interfaces. The
project includes Flightdeck-UI Online (a Web-based dashboard that works entirely through the browser),
the Multi-Variable Monitor (MVM) application, and a Tkinter widget library. Flightdeck-UI Online is installed on a Web server. Configuration files are simple Python scripts; two examples are included with the distribution. The MVM application provides a graphical editor with theme support for quickly creating Flightdeck-UI control panels. Several such panels are included as examples. It is not necessary to write code in order to use MVM. For those wishing to do so, however, plug-in modules are very easy to develop. Several such modules are provided in the distribution.

xplain2sql converts files from Xplain to SQL. It supports a very large subset of Xplain, and it can convert from Xplain to Microsoft SQL Server, DB/2,
Inprise InterBase, PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, or ANSI-92 SQL. It can also generate an XML description of the generated SQL. This XML description can be used to create low-level middle-tier code. A Delphi/ADO XSLT style sheet is included. The C source code release should compile on any platform with an ANSI C compiler. There are binary releases for FreeBSD, BeOS, Linux, and Windows 2000.

Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its
normal mode of operation, it takes an email
message or other text on standard input, does a
statistical check against lists of "good" and
"bad" words, and returns a status code indicating
whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is
designed with fast algorithms (including Berkeley
DB system), coded directly in C, and tuned for
speed, so it can be used for production by sites
that process a lot of mail.

Changes:
Minor FAQ updates and corrections were made. The
configure script aborts if the ar(1) command
cannot be found. Berkeley DB 4.4 is now supported.

The tempo dialog box has been revamped and now it
preserves more state when changing the tempo of
tracks. A stupid bug that happened for SQLite

not shown if it's the first time it runs or if
there is no collection. A general master/slave
DCOP bridge was implemented for use with FC4's
kdebindings. This bridge is also about 10 times

GroundWork Foundation is a network management data abstraction layer and development platform written in Java. Currently, it uses data from Nagios, but feeders can easily be written for other network management tools. It uses a listener-feeder architecture and exchanges data in XML. The feeders and the listener can be extended with PHP, Perl, and Java APIs. Currently, it is built with Sun's JDK 1.4.2, not 1.5. Note that building requires the proper installation of Apache Maven and Ant.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
This is the first snapshot release of Foundation
1.1 after the code freeze. Enhancements include
integration with more diverse data sources in
addition to Nagios, the ability to add data
normalizers dynamically to the feeder framework,
and the ability to enhance the data store of the
admin feeder via XML feeds. A new tutorial was
written to teach how to write a data normalizer
and integrate it into Foundation.

containing RCS keywords and dollar signs ($).

We didn't hear about this danger from flying saucer nutcases but from the ultra-respectable British publication The Guardian, which says, "According to a scientific report, planet Earth's computers are wide open to a virus attack from Little Green Men." So far, there is no evidence whatsoever that Linux is immune to alien computer viruses. Could this threat bring the spread of Linux to a halt?

A software product description is nothing without screenshots. They are the most-clicked links on almost every free software page -- much more than "Download." Screenshots carry information about the software's appearance, maturity, user interface, user friendliness, and feature set in a much more immediate way than paragraphs of text description. You can't show some software characteristics with still images, however. That's why, in recent months, the screencast has seen growing popularity. And when you need to creating screencasts, Istanbul and Wink make the process easy for Linux users.
