Gadget, Gear and Gizmos from the Consumer Electronics Show

Nothing like a mega-huge trade show to kick the year off right!
I'm just one of a small army heading to Las Vegas to cover
the world's biggest electronics show, CES. We'll be bringing you
previews of all the coolest new products, news reports,
video of the keynotes (starting with Bill Gates on Wednesday night),
photos and special versions of DL.TV Thursday through Saturday
live from Las Vegas. Want to get a jump on our coverage? Head to http://www.pcmag.com/ces for our special report, packed with
previews of everything from robotics to Sony and the PS3. We'll
be updating the page continuously, starting Wednesday morning, as
reports from the press conferences and the show floor start rolling in!

A Camera with Two Built-In Lenses

If one lens on a camera is good, why not double your fun with two?
That's what the wacky engineers at Kodak thought, so here's what
they came up with: the EasyShare V570. One lens is used for
wide-angle shots, the other for close-ups. Is this a good idea? Does
the camera actually work well? Check out our review for details on
this truly unique, yet imperfect camera.

Speed Up and Condition that New PC

So you got a new PC for the holidays. Congratulations! But
unless you built it yourself, it's probably heavily laden with
all sorts of craplets and settings that will just slow you down.
We've put together a list of our favorite tips to help you clean
up what the vendors slapped onto it so you can speed up that
new machine. And as a bonus we've also put together our best
advice on how to secure the machine from prying eyes on the Net.

Dvorak Likes Yelp

What's Yelp? A new site that combines the social networking
capabilities of Friendster and Linked-In with the online review
capabilities of ePinions and Trip Advisor. And John Dvorak
thinks it's one of the neatest new sites on the Net—despite the fact
that he hates each idea individually. What's to like about Yelp?
Check out his story, and then check it out for yourself.

Intel Unveils a New Logo

Forget the lowercase and the descending "e"—it's a new world
at Intel. And forget that old "Intel Inside" phrase as well, as the
huge chip maker charts a new course. What will the new logo
look like? It's all swirly! What's the new catchphrase? You'll
have to read our story to find out, but it's more of a "leap" than
the last one. It's the new, consumer-friendly Intel, and you'll
read all about it later this week (and see it too with our video
coverage of CES) as CEO Ottelini rolls it out in his keynote. But
we've got the scoop today in our story. Plus, we've got a look at
secret chips from Intel that are due to launch Thursday. Check it
out today and then weigh in with your own opinions in our forums.

Intel's New Pentium Extreme Edition Reviewed

Intel snuck out the 955—its latest super-fast EE Pentium—just
before the holidays. What with AMD wiping the floor with Intel's
performance results, the analysts at ExtremeTech were dying to
see if this new CPU could regain the performance lead. They put
it through its paces and came up with some interesting
conclusions—once they managed to cool down the poor thing.
Check out their review for details on how it performed, how to
cool it and what to build.

Disappointing Dell Deals with Backlash

It's been a bad year for Dell. The company failed to hit its
earning targets, and support was a nightmare. And now the
boo-birds have come to roost, calling for Dell to do everything
from adding a channel strategy and embracing Linux to adopting
AMD processors. Should Dell give in, or is the company basically
sound? Our story explores where Dell is now, and what it should
do to adapt to the changing market.

Manipulating Matter with the Geeks

Have you seen our wacky new animated series, Live N*de Geeks?
Imagine a combination of TechTV's Screen Savers and Wayne's
World, and you'll begin to understand what's going on! We
just posted the latest episode, in which those lovable nuts
talk with Google CEO Eric Schmidt, deconstruct the $100 laptop
and more. Watch it today!

That's it for today's What's New Now. Remember, you can
always read the same stuff online at the
blog--www.whatsnewnow.com. Or subscribe to the RSS feed.

BeanBunny writes "I realize that this topic is almost as volatile around here as Intelligent Design, but I think this is interesting nonetheless. US-CERT has released their year-end vulnerability summary. According to InformationWeek.com, Linux/Unix (including Mac OS) had almost three times the number of OS-specific vulnerabilities reported last year compared to Microsoft Windows. Obviously, statistics are meaningless without the proper conjecture, speculation, and opinionation, so let the debate begin again over which OS is really more secure."

Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Ubuntu Linux, has explained why he thinks the DCC (Debian Common Core, but don't let the Debian guys hear that) will fail. "The vision behind DCC, which is indeed compelling, is that it would provide a common platform for certification, and that the distros that make up the DCC would all ship exactly that same core. But it strikes me that this approach has never worked in the past. In fact, every distro ALWAYS modifies elements of the core, and with good reason. And while we would love that not to be the case, the truth is that the reasons to specialise outweigh the benefits of homogeneity."

The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team released its year-end summary of computer vulnerabilities. While Windows is regarded as the most insecure operating system, the US-CERT found four times as many vulnerabilities specifically related to Unix and Linux. Of 5198 reported flaws, 812 were for the Windows, 2328 for Unix and Linux, and 2058 more affected more than one operating system. Notably missing from the list of Windows vulnerabilities is the recently discovered Windows Metafile issue. No vulnerabilities were listed for Apple's Mac OS X, however several had been disclosed during the year. Also, since OS X is based on Unix, it is vulnerable to some of the flaws associated with its core operating system.

Pigalle (PIcture GALLEry) is a slick Web based photo album
written in PHP 5. It makes it easy to create and maintain photo
albums via an intuitive interface, as users need only upload their
files to a server and let the program generate thumbnails for
them. Visitors can choose their preferred image resolution and
images will be generated on the fly. These generated images are
cached and all meta-information such as album descriptions,
image information, and user settings are stored in a database.
A back-end administration interface helps to manage the files,
edit the descriptions, and so on, making it very easy and
convenient.

ANSI Common Lisp is a high-level, general-purpose programming language. GNU CLISP is a Common Lisp implementation by Bruno Haible of Karlsruhe University and Michael Stoll of Munich University, both in Germany. It mostly supports the Lisp described in the ANSI Common Lisp standard. It runs on most GNU and Unix systems (GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, Tru64, HP-UX, BeOS, NeXTstep, IRIX, AIX and others) and on other systems (Windows NT/2000/XP, Windows 95/98/ME) and needs only 4 MB of RAM.

It is Free Software and may be distributed under the terms of GNU GPL, while it is possible to distribute commercial proprietary applications
compiled with GNU CLISP. The user interface comes in English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Russian and Danish, and can be changed at run time. GNU CLISP includes an interpreter, a compiler, a debugger, CLOS, MOP, a foreign language interface, sockets, i18n, fast bignums and more. An X11 interface is available through CLX, Garnet, CLUE/CLIO.
