Motorola unveiled the ROKR E2 cellphone at CES and it's got the much needed improvments that could make it a great phone. First and foremost, hell froze over and Motorola didn't use their horrible old interface. They instead went with their new Linux-based system which is a lot nicer, easier to use, and runs great software like Opera and an e-mail client. (Moto will be bringing Linux into most of its handsets over the next year.) A dedicated music button on the E2 brings up a nice music player that can display album art on it's 262k color, 320x240 screen. Your music isn't limited to 100 songs anymore because you'll be using your own SD cards along with the ROKR E2 to expand your listening library. Motorola also realized that some of us own decent headphones so the headphone jack is standard size. E2 also features controls on the side for your music so it's easier to skip tracks and pause tunes. The camera is now 1.3MP with flash and does video and the quality is suprisingly decent. If the original ROKR pissed you off and made you sad, give the E2 a shot. It's a huge improvement that should not be overlooked.

At least three Linux-based phones were shown at CES this week. WNC's GW1 dual mode GSM/WiFi SIP phone is running a version of Trolltech's latest Qtopia Phone edition with VoIP/SIP capabilities. Motorola showed its new Linux-based ROKR E2 feature-phone too (pics, video), but the iTunes software is now removed. This feature phone uses Motorola's new softkey-based UI. Recently, information became known for Motorola's A1200, which uses the older touchscreen UI, same to the one we reviewed a few months ago. Unfortunately, the SDKs of these phones won't be released to developers at large to create native applications, as Motorola is not interested in creating a compatible Linux "platform" similar to Symbian/WinMobile/Palm platforms and instead is pushing just for generic Java apps.

SCO says it 'seeks leave to file a Second Amended Complaint in significant part in consideration of the counterclaims that Novell asserted in its Answer and Counterclaims.' SCO now accuses Novell of infringing SCO's copyrights by distributing SUSE Linux, of breaching a non-compete clause between the two companies, and SCO is also asking for specific performance forcing Novell to turn over the Unix copyrights to SCO. So SCO is essentially admitting that Novell owns the copyrights at this point, but is saying that Novell breached the contract (that specifically excluded copyrights) by failing to transfer them to Santa Cruz."

I for one have no particular problems with the fact that Nessus has gone to a closed source model from version 3, with the exception that this means I can t run Nessus on some of my platforms of choice (ie, Gentoo Linux). However, since a package is available for Debian 3.x, I wondered if it would work on Ubuntu. This didn t prove too difficult - I expect because Ubuntu is based on Debian 3.x and also because the Nessus developers have historically bundled their own versions of libraries to prevent library dependency issues (that seems to be the usual reason for not being able to install Debian packages on Ubuntu for me).

Open source has brought a new set of rules to the table of which every IT shop needs to be aware. First and foremost are the licenses under which open source software is distributed and this is a topic you ll hear a lot about in 2006 as the most common open source license the General Public License (GPL) releases a draft of its third version.

LoggedFS is a a fuse-filesystem in which it's
possible to log every single operation in syslog.
With this, one can see every read, write, open,
chmod, etc. operation on a filesystem. Since it is
fuse-based, you don't need to change anything in
your kernel or hard disk partition to use it. The
configuration file allows you to choose for which
types of file you would like to log operations.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
There's a new configuration file in XML, which allows you to be more precise on what you want to log and what you don't want to to log.

Source: Freshmeat Daily News

Common Configuration Parser (CCP) is a program
that reads configuration files and upgrades them.
It takes an oldfile (typically the configuration
file currently in use) and a newfile (typically
the default new configuration file) and optionally
a template (a file that describes how the
generated configuration file should look) and
merges the files into one, creating a new
configuration file that has the changes made to
the old file in addition to the new options
included in the new file. It is completely
independent of the program that created the
configuration file, and can be used for many
different purposes such as merging changes between
an old user-edited configuration file and a
.rpmnew file generated by RPM during upgrades.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Now only strips comments in the beginning of lines (fixes bug #15364). The use of keys with special characters (such as []) in them has been fixed. No longer defines the package CCP. Now reacts to the CCP_VERBOSE and CCP_VERYVERBOSE environment variables.

pre-processor for modelling, a solver with editor,
a post-processor, and a graph plotter for results
viewing. Impact also interfaces with several other

Changes:
This release contains a range of bugfixes and optimizations. Selection is now multitudes faster since the tree does not expand automatically. The boundary button now supplies all boundary curves on a surface. Delaunay triangulation mesh of surfaces is slightly improved. Objects selected in the tree can easily be erased with the delete button. Clearer visual of selected objects. Triangle surfaces are now possible, including rotated surfaces. The main purpose of LoFiMo is, as the name states, to monitor log files. It does this in real time, i.e. shows the contents of log files as they are changing. The user can connect to LoFiMo with a Web browser or use the console for plain text output. When using a Web browser, the output can be formatted with cascading stylesheets, which the user can define. Thus, it is possible to highlight certain log entries with different colors and fonts. It is also possible to play sounds or execute commands (send an email, play sound with a custom player, etc.) when a log entry matches a filter.
LoFiMo can parse Apache style log files and syslog style log files. Among others, there are filters that can parse iptables logs and merge multiple log lines of Postfix into a single one.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
This release adds some documentation, fixes a bug in Postfix log processing, and adds the ability to filter Postfix log entries by status (e.g. to highlight bounced and deferred email).

KTechlab is an IDE for electronic circuits and microcontrollers. It can perform simulation of a variety of components (logic, integrated, linear, nonlinear, and reactive), simulation and debugging of PIC microcontrollers via gpsim, and comes with its own closely-linked and complementary high level languages: FlowCode and Microbe. It has been designed to be as easy to use and unintrusive as possible; all components and FlowParts have context sensitive help, and simulating electronics is as simple as dragging components onto the work area and creating connectors that autoroute themselves between their pins. FlowCode allows users new to PICs to instantly create their own programs, while the electronic simulation allows stepping through a PIC's assembly program inside a circuit.

Everywhere you look in the trade press today, you'll find glowing misrepresentations of US-CERT's latest annual summary of vulnerabilities discovered in 2005. If you take the summary findings at face value, you would likely conclude that Windows -- with 812 reported vulnerabilities -- is a much safer operating system than something called "Unix/Linux," which totaled 2,328. The US-CERT summaries have become the fodder for a FUD festival, and many scribes sympathetic to the Microsoft cause go out of their way to make sure the real picture never emerges.
