Nice article on virtual memory usage."This entry is for those people who have ever wondered, "Why the hell is a simple KDE text editor taking up 25 megabytes of memory?" Many people are led to believe that many Linux applications, especially KDE or Gnome programs, are "bloated" based solely upon what tools like ps report. While this may or may not be true, depending on the program, it is not generally true -- many programs are much more memory efficient than they seem." Virtual Threads: Und

Motorola first announced its intention to migrate its mobile "smart" phones to embedded Linux in 2003. The first such phone to reach the market was the A760 in the fourth quarter of that year. Today there are a dozen or so models (differing product numbers in different markets and minor hardware variations lead to different counts), but there are still no significant ecosystems for third-party applications or developers. Is Motorola's switch to Linux a hit for the company but a miss for end users?

Ravi writes "Any system or network administrator will know the importance of applying patches to the various softwares running on their servers be it the numerous bug fixes or vulnerability checks. Now when you are maintaining just a single machine, this is really a simple affair of downloading the patches and applying them on your machine. But what happens when you are managing multiple servers and hundreds of client machines? How do you keep all these machines under your control up to date with the latest bug fixes? Obviously, it is a waste of time and bandwidth to individually download all the patches and security fixes for each machine. This is where this book named "Linux Patch Management - Keeping Linux systems up to date" authored by Michael Jang gains significance. This book released under the Bruce Perens' open source series aims to address the topic of patch management in detail." Read the rest of Ravi's review

Nick-oshean in the Gentoo forums writes - "This how-to will discuss how to get EVDO on Gentoo Linux. Specifically Verizon EVDO using the Keyocera KPC650 EVDO PCMCIA card. Most if not all EVDO PCMCIA cards are just serial modems with usb-serial hardware. So they basically just show up as USB devices. They could have just been serial devices but I guess it's easier in windows to make it a USB device that converts to/from serial, maybe it's easier to write drivers for or easier to work with. But it makes it relatively easy for us to support it in Linux." Link.

Users with servers powered by Intel's "Paxville" Xeon MP processor can now activate the chip's virtualization capabilities. Speaking at a conference here on virtualization, Diane Bryant, vice president and general manager of Intel's Server Platforms Group, said that users can now contact systems makers Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM to help them upgrade the BIOS on the chip to enable the activation of the Intel Virtualization Technology.

The technology was in the chip when it started shipping last year, but it was disabled until now. "You can now enable virtualization technology in your servers and start running it in your testing and development environments," Bryant told the conference attendees. She also noted support from Red Hat and Novell's SuSE Linux unit for the open-source Xen virtualization technology, and announced virtualization software vendor VMware's release Feb. 6 of its free VMware Server product.

PhpWebGallery is an image gallery with a very simple installation interface and administration panel. It features free or restricted access, user management, groups, access management for each category, multi-server support, user comments, HTML templates, virtual categories, multi-lingual support, an RSS notification feed, EXIF and IPTC support, multi-category support (each picture can belong to more than one category), compliance with W3C specifications, and simple external authentication.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Instead of a specific session manager, this release uses a default PHP session system with a database handler. The search engine backend was redesigned to avoid passing search rules in URLs. Current search rules can be displayed in a popup. The ability to go to the first and last picture of the current section was added. The speed for viewing pictures from remote sites was improved. The ability to choose pictures ordering inside a section was added.

Fcron is a periodical command scheduler which aims at replacing vixie cron, so it implements most of its functionality. It does not assume that your system is running either all the time or regularly: you can, for instance, tell fcron to execute tasks every x hours y minutes of system uptime or to do a job only once in a specified interval of time. You can also set a nice value to a job, run it depending on the system load average, and much more.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
This release has several bugfixes, especially for BSD systems. The man pages have been translated to French. Please note that a buffer overflow was been found in the program convert-fcrontab, which is part of fcron 3.0.0. It seems that this bug is not exploitable, but it is safer to upgrade to 3.0.1 (which includes a fix for this bug) as soon as possible.

individual authenticated user for an additional

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
This release fixes a very minor security problem (and a few other small unrelated bugs) where a user with write access to a server could create a specially formatted file, and coerce someone with owner privileges in the Gallery to click on a specially formatted link, which could modify stored album data and possibly lead to local code execution.

image file formats, color gradients, and TTF
fonts. There is also basic XML file support and a
smart persistence wrapper. OpenGUI supports the
keyboard and mouse as event sources, the Linux

The WiKID Strong Authentication System is a highly
scalable, secure two-factor authentication system
consisting of a server, a token client, and
network clients that connect a service such as a
VPN or Web page to the WiKID server to validate
one-time passcodes. The user enters their PIN into
the token client, where it is encrypted and sent
to the server. If the PIN is correct, the
encryption valid, and account active, the one-time
passcode is generated, encrypted, and returned to
the user. It is simple to implement and maintain,
allows users to be validated automatically,
requires no hardware tokens, has a simple API for
application support via a COM object and Java
component, supports multiple domains, and supports
replication for fault tolerance and scalability.

This small tool consists of two executables,
udp_send2 and udp_recv2, implementing plaintext
non-interactive data transfer over UDP/IPv4 with a
preset transfer rate. On lossy links, it yields
better throughput than TCP-based transfers. It may
also be used for smooth user space throttling. It
dedicates a mode to SNAT/MASQ, so the receiver can
initiate transfer from behind a firewall. It
features a very precise user space packet
scheduler. It handles SIGSTOP in a rational way.
It only transfers in one direction for one
invocation. It needs and uses no synchronous I/O
multiplexing. Shell access is required on both
ends. The package also contains the auxiliary
multi-threaded tool "bigpipe", which can be used
to reduce pipeline latency.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
The package has been ported to Cygwin 1.5.19-4.
Some messages are more user friendly now. Several
small portability and documentation related fixes
have been applied against bugs which likely
manifested nowhere. The multi-threaded program
"bigpipe" has been added for Unix98 platforms and
Unix95 platforms with Posix Threads. It promotes
asynchronicity among members of a pipeline. It
helps in advancing through regular files on NFS-,
SMB-, or USB-mounted devices. This benefits
udp_copy2 directly because it requires very low
latency on stdin/stdout. The version numbering has
been sanitized.

The support is spotty in places, and varies between systems because of differences in keyboards, distributions, fonts, and program support. Even so, if you make a few configuration changes, you can use the keyboard to enter the characters for dozens of languages with only a few problems.
