What's the Best Browser for You?

After our tests of the latest beta of Internet Explorer—which everybody at PC Magazine but me thinks is junk—it's a good time to revisit the whole browser question. Should you
stay with IE, or maybe jump to Firefox? What about Opera?
Are there any other browsers worth considering? We just put
together our overview of the top non-IE browsers to help you make the right decision.

Demo 2006 Show Report

Every year, 70 or so of the neatest new products are rolled
out en masse at the Demo executive conference in Phoenix.
I'm there for the next two days, as are Michael Miller and
Ben Gottesman. We'll be bringing you all sorts of coverage
of these new products, including Michael's coverage on his
new blog, video at DL.TV and more. Want a jump on what's
getting announced? Check out our preview article, and stay
tuned to PCmag.com for more all week.

Opera to Demonstrate New Browser

One thing I'm looking forward to: Opera's latest browser, on display at Demo. According to our story, the new browser
adds support for BitTorrent and Yahoo-like widgets, along
with lots of other cool features. The software should be
available today in preview form and will be released later
in the summer. Our story has all the details, along with
where to find the new code.

New Source Code Search Engine Debuts

It's not easy to use traditional search engines to find code snippets and other supporting documents. That's why a startup focused just on code has launched. The product is called
"Krugle" and indexes just code and related files. Does it
really work? Our story has the details. Krugle also is
launching at Demo, and I have just one bit of advice: Lose
the dumb name that rhymes with Google, OK?

Nifty New Motorola Phone Updates ROKR, RAZR

Did you see Motorola's clever Super Bowl ad for the PEBL phone? I loved it--just as we loved the phone when we reviewed it a few months ago. In fact, we're pretty happy with most of
Moto's latest--except for the ROKR. But Motorola learned from that failed attempt at integrating iTunes into a phone, and
they're back with a much better model. We just tested the
SLVR, a sliver of a phone that combines a non-flip RAZR with iTunes. Another great-looking phone from Motorola--our reviewer details what we liked and why. (And an aside, what's with
these weird names, Moto? Can you buy a vowel or two already?!)

A Fine Smart Phone

Looking for smart, not sensual? Then consider the new SDA
from T-Mobile. It's a Windows-based smart phone without an
amazing design but loaded with tons of features. Our reviewer called it "fun," along with praising the built-in Wi-Fi, Web surfing experience and the media playback options. It's also priced well, compared with other smart phones. If function
over form is for you, this phone's a winner.

Super-Fast High-Speed Cell Nets Reviewed

How would you like a stunning 1.5 megabits per second
anywhere you roam, wirelessly? It's not possible everywhere, but where it's good, it is really, really good. That's our
takeaway from a recent test of super-high-speed cellular data networks from Cingular, Verizon and Sprint. We've got an
update on coverage and true performance--along with where
you can get it today.

New RIM Alternatives Abound

It might just be coincidence, but suddenly there are all sorts of new options for pushing data to smart phones and other
devices. Sony Ericsson, for example, has licensed Microsoft's Exchange-based delivery process. And a new mobile software
company just announced the first open-source push e-mail
product. When will those new Sony phones be available? How
can you download the open-source software? Our story has all that, and more.

A Real Stand-Up Mouse

Why would you want a mouse that stands vertically, instead
of lying flat on the ground? We took the new Vertical Mouse
2 to the test, and though oddly shaped, it ultimately won us over. It seems to have medical benefits compared with the
traditional mice, and it looks pretty cool too. Check out our complete review with pictures and more! You're on your way
to healthy mousing!

NAS Conundrum: Build or Buy

I'm usually of the mind to build my own where possible. I
recently did that with an ADS NAS at home, and it works
really well. But perhaps I should have purchased instead. We just did an in-depth look at Buffalo's new TeraStation home server--a terabyte of storage in a neat looking package--and came away very impressed. It's small, quiet and about as
inexpensive as building it yourself. Looking for shared
storage at home or in your small business? This is the one!
Check out our review.

Microsoft Looks Into Help Hole

The Help system used on the Windows platform might be vulnerable. Reports of a buffer overflow problem have been spreading
around the Net, and now Microsoft is actively exploring the
issue. A proof-of-concept exploit has been released, and the hole could allow hackers to take control of remote machines. Who is at risk? What can you do about it? Our story has details.

Charging for E-Mail Is Dumb

Did you see the reports? AOL and Yahoo plan on charging
businesses to deliver bulk mail--a few pennies for a thousand e-mails. It's the Internet version of paying protection money --if you don't pay, we won't guarantee delivery. John Dvorak just took a look at the new service, and he is not impressed. It's not only a bad idea, it's an old one that's been tried
and rejected. Check out what he really thinks in his new
column.

WNN Podcast

If you're listening to our weekly what's New Now Podcast,
thanks! If so, you might have had trouble downloading the
last one. Our apologies, we made a mistake encoding the XML
to point to that file. We've fixed it, so you can go ahead

"Linus Torvalds doesn't want to change the Linux kernel's software license, and he said so again last week. For good measure this time, he threw in some inflammatory remarks. "I literally feel," wrote Torvalds, "that we do not, as software developers, have the moral right to enforce our rules on hardware manufacturers. We are not crusaders, trying to force people to bow to our superior God." Since the crusades were a foreign adventure responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands, that's not the most diplomatic response, and FSF counsel Eben Moglen refused to be drawn into retaliation when we contacted him for comment."

These enhancements open up a whole world of hardware acceleration, fancy animation, separating hardware resolution from software resolution, and more. Videos and screenshots are included in the press release. And on a related note, Dan Winship of Novell has explained on gnome-desktop-devel why Novell worked on all this behind closed doors-- and this also applies to the striking similarity between Novell's mockups from December and Nat Friedman's videos. The changes made to GNOME will all be released back to GNOME.

Mr A Coward writes "Richard Stallman has stated in an interview that he no longer supports Creative Commons licenses. In the interview carried on LinuxP2P.com, and which is largely about the P2P and DRM issues, Stallman ends by saying: 'I no longer endorse Creative Commons. I cannot endorse Creative Commons as a whole, because some of its licenses are unacceptable.' He suggests instead using the GPL for creative works." The crux of his argument is that, since he disagrees with some of the CC licenses, and people tend to lump them all together, he feels compelled to reject them all. What's your take? Are some Creative Commons licenses worth using, even if others aren't?

Novell, in effort to bring easier virtualization capabilities to Linux deployments, on Monday announce that its SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 operating systems now supports Virtual Iron Software Inc.'s data center virtualization and management platform.

Novell will ship the SUSE Linux software with a pre-configured kernel for use with Virtual Iron virtualization software. That will let users rapidly deploy and configure enterprise-class computing workloads in their data centers, says Mike Grandinetti, chief marketing officer for Virtual Iron.

The market for embedded software is poised to boom. Currently, many would-be customers write their own code in-house. But that can be costly. MontaVista reckons the market for embedded Linux could become as big as $5 billion a year, over time.

Source: Open Source Directory :: OSDir.com

Motorola first announced its intention to migrate its mobile "smart" phones to embedded Linux in 2003. The first such phone to reach the market was the A760 in the fourth quarter of that year. Today there are a dozen or so models (differing product numbers in different markets and minor hardware variations lead to different counts), but there are still no significant ecosystems for third-party applications or developers. Is Motorola's switch to Linux a hit for the company but a miss for end users?

This is not to say that there is no development happening on these phones. There is a fairly active community of interested Linux hackers at MotorolaFans.com, and Harald Welte of GPL-violations.org fame has started an OpenEZX project in hopes of developing a completely free alternative environment for the phones. But Motorola seems to be putting up roadblocks rather than encouraging programmers to develop for the platform.
