We've never
seen much use for MSN TV (previously known as Web TV), Microsoft's info appliance for TV-based web surfing. But
the street finds its own use for things, so we can't say we're too surprised to see that some dude has not only been
able to get the box to run Linux, but is actually building a server cluster out of them. The hack does involve some
hardware mods, so it's not necessarily something for casual script kiddies to undertake (and it's certainly not
something any of MSN TV's target users will ever attempt), but considering you can pick these up on eBay for a song, it
could be a pretty cheap way to build your own server farm if you've got the chops to make it work. [Thanks,

sshdfilter automatically blocks ssh brute force
attacks by reading sshd log output in real time
and adding iptables rules based on authentication
failures. Block rules are created by logging on
with an invalid user name, or wrongly guessing the

removed after a week to maintain a small list of
blocks. It also comes with a LogWatch filter.

DaemonRip runs as a Unix daemon and polls a CD
drive to see if an audio CD is inserted. When an
audio CD is detected, it will automatically
connect to a CDDB server to determine the name,
artists, and tracks of the CD, and begin to rip
and encode the CD using your preferred ripping and
encoding applications. When finished ripping the
disc, it will be ejected from the drive, allowing
you to insert a new one to continue the process.
No other user interaction is required. This
application also keeps statistics about your
ripping and encoding times, and logs all of the
actions to a log file.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Extra samples were added to the daemonrip.conf
file. A problem was fixed where when stopping the
daemon it had to wait for the existing sub process
to finish prior to stopping the main daemon. A
directory flag was added to the ripping program so
that it knows where to save the files to. A
problem was fixed where the genre replacement in
the encoder line was not implemented correctly. %g
now works correctly.

PLPA is an attempt to solve the problem of
multiple API's for processor affinity within
Linux. Specifically, the functions
sched_setaffinity() and sched_getaffinity() have
numbers and types of parameters depending on your
Linux vendor and/or version of GLibc. This is
quite problematic for applications attempting to
use processor affinity in Linux for compile-time,
link-time, and run-time reasons. The PLPA provides
a single processor affinity API that developers
can write to in order to get both consistent
behavior and binary compatibility across different
Linux installations (assuming that you have an
executable that is otherwise binary Linux portable).

License: BSD License (revised)

Changes:
The return status of
plpa_sched_[set|get]affinity() is now ensured to
be zero upon success.
