An anonymous reader writes "SkypeKit gives Linux developers access to core functionality, allowing Linux developers to add video, calling and instant messaging features to desktop applications. The SDK also comes with the freshly royalty-free SILK codec for high-end audio. Skype is hoping that the inclusion of SILK will popularize the codec, extending its reach. Currently, the SkypeKit beta is only available for Linux on an invite-only basis, with Windows and Mac versions planned in coming weeks. The SDK does not cover Android or Mac, an odd choice considering the announcement of SkypeKit championed itself for extending the functionality of Skype to multiple platforms and devices. Including smartphones in the SDK seems like an obvious move." Ars Technica has a rundown, too.

Adobe Photoshop is central to almost all photography workflows today. Each new version fo the software is a milestone in the development of this imaging behemoth, and 2010's release of CS5 is no exception. Photographers often feel overwhelmed when starting with Photoshop; the sheer number of tools and options make it difficult for the novice. There is no shortage of instructional books, yet very few direct the user to the most significant aspects of the program in a way that reflects a real workflow for the photographer. Adobe Certified Instructor Steve Laskevitch has leveraged his experience as a teacher and practitioner to create a step-by-step guide that provides a clear and effective workflow for editing photographs in the latest version of Photoshop and its companions Bridge, Camera Raw, and Lightroom. Focusing on the critical elements of the workflow rather than covering every arcane feature, the Handbook is designed to get you working quickly in these applications.

Web applications have traditionally been stuck in a single-threaded world. This really limited developers in what they could do in their code, since anything too complicated risks freezing up the UI of the application. Web Workers have changed all of that by bringing multi-threading to Web applications. This is particularly useful for mobile Web applications where most of the application logic is client-side. In this article, you will learn how to work with Web Workers and discover which tasks are most appropriate for them. You will see how you can use with other HTML 5 technologies to increase the efficiency of using those technologies.
